In this news:
Have you received an email informing you about Air Europa flight vouchers in cryptocurrency? Many users, customers of the airline, have experienced the same thing: Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) warns that this is another attempted fraud.
On several occasions, Air Europa has suffered cyberattacks in which user data was stolen. These are likely the same data that cybercriminals are now using to “hook” users. How? With a tempting message that lands in your email, impersonating the airline and addressing you by name, offering you the chance to acquire supposed “flight vouchers” with cryptocurrency.
The email pretends to come from Air Europa and offers to purchase flight vouchers using Bitcoin, Ethereum, or Tether, with substantial discounts.
From there, it redirects to another website, which is not the real one.
As reported, Air Europa has alerted that this is a scam and that its identity has been impersonated. The company has confirmed that it has not launched any such campaign and does not accept cryptocurrency as a payment method.
Be aware of scams
The ongoing security breaches suffered by many companies result in data leaks that expose users’ information: names, phone numbers, emails… which criminals use to try to deceive you.
OCU stresses the need, now more than ever, to remain vigilant about any suspicious message or email:
Be cautious of unbeatable offers, even if they come from a company you are or have been a customer of. If in doubt, contact the alleged sender directly.
Do not follow links from the message: go directly to the company’s website.
Do not provide your personal or banking details through links received via email or unverified messages.
Stay up to date with the latest tricks: a well-informed consumer is better protected.
If you’ve fallen for it, don’t stay quiet: report it to organisations like INCIBE or the Security Forces. And remember, OCU can help you.
If you’ve already fallen for the trap, it’s time to claim and ask for your money back:
Here you can access a template from Organization of Consumers and Users to request a refund from the entity if they refuse, citing gross negligence. And remember, to avoid issues, it’s best to stay alert and well-informed.
