The Solana Beach community came together on April 26 to celebrate Earth Week with the official launch of the city’s new beach cleanup station at Fletcher Cove, emphasizing their commitment to environmental stewardship. The station was spearheaded by the City of Solana Beach’s Sustainability Program Manager Nicole Grucky, and her team, and in partnership with EDCO and local Girl Scout Troop 3844. The event started at 9 a.m. with a special unveiling and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the cleanup station.
The unveiling of the beach cleanup station coincided with the 23rd Annual Creek to Bay Cleanup, hosted by the Rob Machado Foundation and I Love a Clean San Diego. At Fletcher Cove alone, 75 registered volunteers showed up and collected 87 lbs. of trash, according to a news release.
Solana Beach Mayor Lesa Heebner said in the news release, “Plastic pollution is a major contributor to biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation…It harms marine life and ultimately makes its way up the food chain and into our bodies.”
People can help by taking a basket and picking up any trash that people have left on the beach or that has washed up on shore.
“This station is designed to make it easy for beach-goers to help keep our shoreline clean and beautiful every day, all year-round,” said Heebner in the news release.
Volunteers were invited to use the reusable shopping baskets at the new cleanup station to clean up trash. A QR code on the sign above the baskets leads to an online forum where people can discuss what they found on the beach and their thoughts on the cleanup station. There are plans for more baskets and cleanup tools to be placed at various locations around other local beaches. You can learn more about the city’s Beach Cleanup Station at
