When asked about African players who have impressed him in LaLiga and across Europe, Gueye, a nominee for the LaLiga African MVP award, was quick to celebrate the depth of talent on display.
“There are plenty of good African players; I am proud to be one of the nominees,” he said. “I am thinking Nicolas Pepe, my teammate at Villarreal; he could have been nominated as well. Logan Costa, he’s brave. And after, there are plenty of Africans, but I am not going to mention everybody.”
“I think there’s a lot of talent, especially in the AFCON. You see there is so much talent—there’s a young generation that’s coming through now. Even with the Senegalese team, there are very good young players, 20-21, they all play for their club. So, I am really proud, delighted, and I hope that we can continue like that and see more players.”
Gueye’s comments reflect the vibrancy of African football, with recent AFCON tournaments showing a wave of young stars who are now breaking through at top European clubs.
His mention of Villarreal teammate Pepe and Cape Verde’s Costa shows the diversity and quality of African representation in LaLiga, while his nod to Senegal’s emerging 20- and 21-year-old talents highlights the depth of the continent’s footballing future.
At Villarreal, Gueye has been a linchpin in the Yellow Submarine’s push for Champions League qualification. With only two games remaining in the 2024/2025 LaLiga season, Villarreal are on the cusp of securing a coveted top-four spot, and Gueye’s contributions have been instrumental.
The midfielder has featured in 32 matches this season, scoring two goals and bringing tenacity and creativity to Villarreal’s engine room.
Gueye’s optimism about the future of African football is matched by his pride in being part of the current wave making waves in Europe.
As more young players from Senegal and across the continent secure regular roles at their clubs, the stage is set for a new era of African excellence.
“I hope that we can continue like that and see more players,” Gueye reiterated, a sentiment that resonates as a rallying call for the next generation to seize their moment on the world stage.
