The CSIF union has raised concerns about significant staff shortages during night shifts at Costa del Sol Hospital. According to the union, the hospital lacks sufficient auxiliary nurses and porters to ensure safe and effective patient care.
CSIF reports that just one auxiliary nurse is often left to care for over 30 patients per floor at night. In some cases, a single porter is responsible for up to 180 patients. The union says this situation is unacceptable and poses a risk to both staff and patients.
They have submitted documents to the Labour Inspectorate and hospital management, outlining these concerns and calling for urgent action. The union first filed a formal complaint in December 2023 and says the situation has only worsened since then.
CSIF is requesting the immediate hiring of at least nine auxiliary nurses and four porters to alleviate pressure on the night teams and enhance patient care. They also highlight the issue of unpaid extra hours. Many hospital workers have accumulated over 180 overtime hours since last year, which has yet to be compensated.
The union says the hospital’s refusal to address the issue pushes workers towards legal action. Some cases have already been passed on to CSIF’s legal department.
According to the union, the ongoing lack of staff and unpaid hours are making conditions at Costa del Sol Hospital unsustainable. They insist that without urgent hiring, the crisis will continue to deepen.
