In this news:
Locals on the Costa del Sol were recently treated to a glowing sky show, but if you missed it or want more, there’s more to come this weekend between April 6 and April 7.
Marbella residents and stargazers across the Costa del Sol were left scratching their heads on Wednesday night, April 2, after spotting a string of mysterious lights darting across the cloudy sky – some even thought they’d seen a UFO.
But fear not stargazers – it wasn’t little green men or an alien invasion. The celestial spectacle was actually a high-speed train of Starlink satellites, part of Elon Musk’s ambitious mission to beam internet across the globe.
The luminous chain, described by some as a ‘carousel of lights,’ cut through thick clouds over the coast, capturing the attention of residents from Marbella to Fuengirola. Despite the overcast night, the bright trail was clearly visible – and it’s not the last we’ll see of it.
What is Starlink?
The Starlink project, operated by Musk’s company SpaceX, aims to deploy up to 12,000 satellites in low-Earth orbit. These are designed to deliver high-speed satellite internet to even the most remote corners of the planet – whether you’re in rural Spain or the middle of the Amazon jungle.
Speeds on the standard plan range from 50 to 250 Mbps, while the premium option boasts between 150 and 500 Mbps, with latency as low as 20 to 40 milliseconds. In plain English? It’s fast internet. Really fast internet.
The satellites often appear as a ‘string of pearls’ moving rapidly across the sky, especially in the days immediately after launch – a flashy display that has caused confusion and awe in equal measures around the world.
When can you see them on the Costa del Sol again?
If you missed the latest light show, don’t worry – the Starlink satellites will be back in view this weekend.
April 6: Low visibility over the Costa del Sol.
April 7: Good visibility expected, especially at night.
So, if you’re keen to catch a glimpse of Elon’s cosmic broadband brigade, set your alarm, head outside, and look up. You might just spot the future of the internet zipping by above your head.
