In the drought years we saw that along the coast many seaside towns put a prohibition of beach showers with water conservation being a top priority.
Well, over in the Axarquía water is still a major issue despite a thankfully, wet winter and spring, because four municipalities (Rincón de la Victoria, Vélez-Málaga, Algarrobo and Torrox) have decided that beach showers are out but taps for washing sand off your feet can go ahead.
In Nerja both beach showers and feet washes have been available since Semana Santa but the Town Council will make a decision before the 15th of June on whether to close them off or not.
In other coastal areas such as Valencia they use seawater instead of fresh water for feet washes, which is something that the Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Oriental-Axarquía is contemplating but in the meantime, they recommend that only feet washes be allowed and no beach showers.
The Councillor for Beaches in Nerja, Pérez Atencia, explained, “We’ve been working on the idea of plumbing in seawater for the feet washes for several years and have requested permission from the Junta to bring in a protocol for this.”
He feels that perhaps Costas (Madrid) might be a problem but points out that if in Valencia and Benidorm they already permit this, then it should be permissible for the whole of the Spanish coast.
